Preventing water damage in fall 2021.

9/1/2021 (Permalink)

As we move into the fall season, we are almost excited for apple cider, leaves changing, cool air, and sweater weather! Although fall is an amazing season, as homeowners there are some things you should check off your list before this season.

Gutters:

It has already been a pretty rainy summer, with fall around the corner and cooler weather, we are going to see more rain. As the leaves change and slowly fall off, they can clog the gutter and downspout. Remember to keep them clean this season.

Hurricane Season:

Our hurricane season runs from June to November, so we are in the midst of it. We have already been hit with a few hurricanes, so always remembering to prevent your home from damage is important.

Pipes

Pipes are something that you can easily just look over. Getting them checked and keeping an eye on them for any signs of cracks or leaks is very important. If you do catch a leak early, you'll be able to prevent further damage and any in the future.

Gaps

Seal any gaps. Gaps can be a roadway for rodents and insects. As the weather gets colder, animals like mice are trying to warm up, too, and your home looks like just the place for them if there's a way in.

By taking these simple maintenance tips, you can prevent further damage in your home! If you do experience water damage this fall, SERVPRO of The Attleboros is here to help!

How small leaks can lead to more damage.

6/4/2021 (Permalink)

Small leaks and spills can lead to major damage if not tended to. Leaving water leaks as it is or no cleaning up after a spill can cause mold to form, as well as possibly structure damage to your floors, walls, and insulation.

Not every spill and leak is serious enough to call a professional water cleaning company, but it is important to know how to properly care for one. Acting quickly can help ensure no possible second damages.

Some things to help clean up leaks are:

  • Shop vacuum
  • Towels
  • Box or ceiling fans
  • Dehumidifier

If a small leak becomes serious, call SERVPRO of the Attleboros. We will be ready to help restore your property and needs.

Back to the basics of water damage | Swansea, MA

9/3/2020 (Permalink)

water damage restoration experts Check on your pipes regularly so if there is a leak, you may catch it before it's too late!

Thinking about water damage, we know there are many many causes, but let's go into the basics of how water damage is typically caused in a Swansea residential (or commercial) space

Pipe burst - Commercial or Residential

Leaking or burst pipes are probably one of the most common sources of water damage. It's probably what came to mind first for you! Toilet and sink drains can easily be clogged and backed up, causing a lot of pressure in the pipes, causing a burst or leak. Old, rusty pipes are also common causes of leaking or burst pipes. It's important for you to keep an eye on or regularly check on your pipes so if there is a leak, you may catch it sooner rather than later when it becomes a massive issue.

Plumbing issues

Typically plumbing issues are very hard to catch early due to the pipes being in the walls and under the sink. Checking around the plumbing in your bathroom (and kitchen) can, again, help detect early signs of a leak and prevent further damage.

Appliances

As your appliances get older, so do their inner workings and pipes. Just like the ones in your home system, the pipes can rust and leak or burst. Washing machines, water heaters, and dishwashers are a few of the most common culprits of water damage that we receive calls for here at SERVPRO of the Attleboros

HVAC unit

If your HVAC unit isn't regularly maintained, it can cause you quite some issues, including water and mold damage. Two things you really don't want in your Attleboro home or business.

Weather & storm

With the unpredictable weather in New England, you can never be too prepared for any season. Make sure you take all precautions before a storm, whether it be snow, rain, or hail. Trim hedges and trees around your home, check for any leaks and cracks in the foundation or windows and doors.

If you experience any water damage, no matter the cause, SERVPRO of the Attleboros is here to help! We're your local water damage restoration experts!

Why DIY Water damage restoration can be a bad idea | North Attleboro, MA

7/23/2020 (Permalink)

North Attleboro

Typically when you think of water damage... a flooded basement comes to mind. Probably because this is one of the most common areas where water damage happens. Another thing that may come to mind is "hmmm I can clean it up myself!!"

You should probably scratch that second thought! Water damage handled/ cleaned up by someone who isn't a trained professional can often lead to bigger problems and more damage (undetected).

At SERVPRO of the Attleboros, we use special technology, such as moisture meters, to determine where and how much water there is. We can determine if there is any water hiding behind the walls, in the drywall and under floors, that you might have missed as a DIY-er.

Once you have water damage, some of it will evaporate into the air and remain there as moisture, this will not circulate anywhere if the proper equipment is not used. Without dehumidification, all this moisture can lead to mold growth.... and nobody wants to deal with water and mold in their home!

Now, of course, there are some exceptions, if your sink was just a little leaky and you caught it in time, go ahead and sop up that water (as long as its a smalllll puddle) and fix that leaky pipe before that small puddle turns into a really big one tomorrow! Check around the pipe and around the area of the leak to make sure there is no other damage.

Click here for a great tutorial on fixing those leaky pipes!

Spills

Usually spills aren't that big of a deal for you to clean up on your own. As long as you clean it up right away and don't let it sit. That can cause mold and bacteria to form.

Minor leaks cause major damage

Even the tiniest drip can cause the biggest problems! That's why it's important for you to fix leaks ASAP, and clean up any spills right away.

Better safe than sorry

It can't hurt to call a professional water damage restoration company for an opinion or for some advice on cleaning up a big spill!

North Attleboro, South Attleboro, Norton, Wrentham, Seekonk and more we are here to help. We will try to make your day.

Call 508-223-0505 for any water damage, we'll make it "Like it never even happened."

Wet Insulation after a roof leak in Seekonk MA 02703

6/23/2020 (Permalink)

Should I replace wet insulation? The question is not 'can' it be saved, the question is 'should' it be saved??

When your roof leaks, oftentimes the insulation is one of the first things to experience some damage.

There are two types of insulation that are the most common:

  • fiberglass
  • blown in loose full

When insulation gets wet, it lowers its performance. As soon as insulation gets wet, it loses at least 40% of its insulating R value

Another issue you may run into is mold growth in your insulation. With fiberglass insulation, typically the paper backing will be where you can find most mold growing following a water loss. According to this article, cellulose insulation that is treated with a fire resistant helps to make it a little more water resistant than insulation that is not treated. Of course, it is not fully waterproof. Insulation typically acts like a sponge when introduced to water. It will just suck up the water/moisture and then transfer it to the wood or structures behind it or underneath.

Can wet insulation be saved?

The question is not 'can' it be saved, the question is should it be saved.

Some pros would argue that you shouldn't dry and re-use insulation after water damage. There are two main reasons why you shouldn't re-use insulation.

1: The insulation gets compressed after water damage, reducing its insulating R-value.

2: As stated above, mold is a great concern when insulation gets wet. Especially with cellulose insulation, it's a great host for mold when it gets wet. Mold can begin to grow in as little as 48 hours.

Replacing wet insulation is going to be less expensive in the long run, and will create a healthier environment for you to live or work in. Mold will rarely remain in one part of the house. Leaving wet (dried) insulation will allow for the mold to migrate to other areas of the home/building.

Preventing water damage at your Swansea business 02777

6/5/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage doesn't wait for you to be in the office or warehouse. As a business owner this can be a pretty stressful part of your day to day operations. That's why at SERVPRO of the Attleboros, we're here all day every day.

We don't want you to wait until water damage happens to prepare for the worst, there are some steps you can take to prevent major water damage at your commercial Swansea property or business!

Checking for plumbing issues

A good indicator of plumbing issues is a change in your water bill. If you notice your bill is higher than normal, it could possibly be due to a leaky pipe.

Check the outside of your building

Water coming in from outside is another very common source of water damage. Check windows, doors and anything else exposed to the weather. If there are any gaps, be sure to seal them right away to prevent any damage.

Prepare for any severe weather

Keep an eye on the weather reports, especially during the winter and rainy seasons. Take any precautions to protect your building from any storm or water damage. For example, if there is flooding expected, purchasing sand bags would help!

Sump pumps

Installing a sump pump will give your building a place to drain any water that gets in the basement. This will be a great help in the case of any flooding into your basement. It will help you save on any costly repairs.

Inspect your roof

Regularly inspecting your roof (having a professional inspect) can catch any potential damage before it becomes a major problem.

These are just a few preventative measures you can take to protect your Swansea business from water damage. If you do encounter any damage, don't hesitate to give us a call at (508) 223-0505, we're here to help!!

Sewage Backups - Swansea

12/23/2019 (Permalink)

Coming home to a flooded room/s in your house is bad enough, but then realizing it’s sewage, you have a way bigger problem. This type of water damage requires expert knowledge of handling and cleaning biohazardous materials such as sewage. Our crews will follow the right steps to get your home safe and back to how it was!

What can I do?

You may be able to handle a smaller flood yourself with a wet/dry vac, but if it is a sewer backup, there are 1 too many health risks for you to be handling this on your own. Make sure to:

  • Turn off the main power to your home
  • Stay away from the water!
  • Evacuate the home
  • Call your insurance company and a reputable sewage cleanup company.
    • (508) 223-0505

What do we do?

Get rid of the water

Our crew will start by evaluating the water damage. Then they will use the necessary equipment that is able to come in contact with the sewage. Then they will begin to pump and extract the water from your house.

Drying

Just getting the water out of the house isn’t enough. Sewer backups require industrial strength fans to properly dry the area. The crews will also use dehumidifiers to eliminate any possible mold growth.

Sanitizing

Once there is absolutely no moisture left from the flood, the affected area/s will need to be sanitized and cleaned.  They will use chemicals to kill any harmful materials left behind. Even water from a flooded toilet could cause serious health concerns.

Sewage cleanup is NECESSARY if black water is involved. The bacteria from black water can cause you and your family to become seriously ill. Make sure you contact us right away if you experience a sewer backup in your home or business!

Water/Storm Damage Product Spotlight - DEP Extraction Wand

8/14/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO branded logo and photo of extraction device SERVPRO of The Attleboros water extraction technology for storm damage

DEP Water Extraction Wand

One of the most interesting products here at SERVPRO of The Attleboros is the water extraction wand. After water or storm damage, excessive moisture is most likely present and it needs to be extracted, then dried with the air-movers and dehumidifiers. This handy-dandy wand makes it easy for our technicians to extract water quickly and effectively for the Attleboro home or business owner.

How The Wand Works:

The 2-inch diameter wand ensures the most air-flow through the tub. The handle makes it easy to hold and grasp when trying to cover smaller or tighter, more compact areas of the home. This wand comes with a patented plastic glider that makes using it a breeze. A flexible neck allows for easier use in tighter, clustered areas. This product weighs about 5 pounds. The light-weight design makes it easy for anybody to use.

If vacuum pressure causes it to "cling" to the carpet, just squeeze the vacuum release lever and resume work. Easy easy!

Product Maintenance

Maintaining the cleanliness of this product is important, but there is no need to use abrasive cleaners. If you're using it daily, wipe it clean with a gentle detergent. Vacuum clean water through the device to clean the tube and the head. Inspect the break seal of the vacuum regularly if used a lot. Replace it if it’s damaged. Cleaning the device with hot water and mild detergent goes a long way and will ensure the integrity of the product.

NOTE - These wands are solely meant for carpet use. They are not meant for use on ceramic tiles or hard-wood floors.

Water belongs in a glass with a lemon wedge, not in your home as a result of storm damage! Are you experiencing storm damage in your commercial property or home? Call SERVPRO of The Attleboros at 508-223-0505! We offer 24/7 emergency service.

We Specialize in Water Cleanup!

3/28/2019 (Permalink)

A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your home’s basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
  • And many more

If flood water is not handled quickly and properly, it can jeopardize your health and safety, and cause severe damage to your home’s structure. Remember, the longer you wait, the worse the problem will get.

The bottom line: a flooded basement can jeopardize your health, safety, and your home’s integrity. It’s worth making a call to SERVPRO of The Attleboros and let our trained, professional crews handle the situation safely and correctly. Preventing Frozen Pipes

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Even though it's February 4th, don't think that your pipes cannot freeze!

Being prepared and informed about the dangers of frozen pipes may help you prevent a loss. SERVPRO of the Attleboros can provide you with information and suggestions about how to prevent your homes pipes from freezing:

  • Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines unless directed. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.
  • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
  • Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the basement, crawl space, attic, garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
  • Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.

During Cold Weather, Take Preventative Action

  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
  • When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
  • If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

If you experience any issues, please do not hesitate to contact SERVPRO of the Attleboros at 508-223-0505 or visit our website.
