Swansea Mass do you know what is soot?

What is soot?

Soot is what is left behind when organic material such as wood, coal, and oil haven’t completely burned. Soot contains chemicals, metals, dust, acid and other particles. Leaving sticky black marks on any surface it comes in contact with.

During a fire, soot spreads through the entire building or home attaching itself to anything and everything.

If your chimney isn’t properly cleaned, creosote can build up inside and cause soot when you light a fire.

Getting rid of soot:

Most often you will be able to physically see the soot deposits on walls and ceilings. They are large black marks left after a fire. But there are individual soot particles floating around in the air that you can’t see, you can smell them though. Soot produces a smoky odor, which is another way you can tell if an area has been affected.

It is important to get soot taken care of right away because it can cause some health concerns if you're exposed to it for too long.

Even if the fire to your home or business was small, soot particles can take over your entire property through the ventilation and air systems.

Trying to clean it up yourself is not your best bet. Cleaning up soot requires professional equipment, knowledge and experience.
