Removing Permanent Marker Stains | Attleboro, MA

8/4/2020 (Permalink)

Remove stains like a pro! Tackle those stains and show 'em who's boss!

We've all seen it...the moment when your child, grandchild, niece/nephew picks up that sharpie and writes on the

  • Wall
  • Counter
  • Window
  • Couch

(and anything else they can reach)

Panic probably sets in trying to get to the stain before it sets in.

That's what we're here to help with!! Here are some of our favorite DIY stain removal techniques for those marker, juice, and food stains!!

Removing permanent marker from walls

Grab your handy dandy toothpaste for this one!

Toothpaste method: Put a small dab of white toothpaste with a cloth directly onto the affected area. Don't use gel toothpaste. Run to your local dollar store and grab a tube of regular white toothpaste. Use a circular motion to remove the mark and voila!! No more stain!

Be very careful when you're rubbing the walls, however. You won't want the paint to come off (unless you have the paint handy still, you can paint over it...in that case, paint over the stain itself)

Removing permanent marker from your countertops

So, you noticed some marker on your countertops... easy fix!!

Say you have quartz countertops... luckily for you that's one of the easier types to clean, but not the most stain proof.

Bring out the toothpaste again!! Use the same method as the wall, let the toothpaste sit for 10 minutes then use a damp cloth to wipe clean! (This works for most tile floors too ;)

If your countertops are a lighter color, use lemon juice and salt.... yes...salt. Let it sit for an hour and wipe with a damp cloth!

Granite countertops: Use hydrogen peroxide... don't let it sit for too long though.

Laminate countertops (and floors): Here's that toothpaste again!! Use toothpaste mixed with some baking soda, rubbing alcohol, or the handy dandy magic eraser!

Removing permanent marker from glass (dishes/windows...)

You have a handful of options here...

  • Toothpaste and baking soda (MVP's of this blog)
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Nail polish remover

Take your cleaner of choice, out it on a paper towel and wipe away those marks!!

Removing permanent marker from your couch or other upholstered furniture

You'll need

  • Vinegar
  • Water
  • Dish washing soap
  • Clean (white) cloths - White so you can see the stain lift!
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Sponges

Mix together 1 tbsp of the dish soap, one tbsp vinegar, and two cups of cold water.

Take a sponge and dip it into the mixture and dab it onto the marker spots until they're damp. Not soaked. Let this sit for 20-30 minutes and blot the stain every 5 minutes and watch that marker come out of the couch!

Using your rubbing alcohol, use a new cloth and dab the alcohol around the stain, working from the outside in. Don't rub it in, dab it!

If any stains of any kind have proven to be too much for you to DIY, give us a call at 508-223-0505, we're here to help!!

Keeping your tile floors clean and shiny! | Seekonk, MA

7/17/2020 (Permalink)

Just like any other part of your house, you want to keep your floors looking clean, shiny, and good as new!! When it comes to tile, most people choose it because it's relatively easy to clean and maintain. Obviously, you still have to take good care of tile floors.

Vacuuming

Dirt enters your home every day, from pets, kids shoes, and just opening the door can bring in some dirt/dust.

Getting into the habit of vacuuming, dry mopping, or dusting every day is the fastest way to keep your floor looking clean! Avoid using regular or straw brooms on the tile floor, it can scratch the tile.

Using a door mat or area rug

If your entry way has tile flooring, consider placing a door mat inside and outside the door! This will help capture most of the loose dirt and debris on your shoes before you step on the floors.

Another way to prevent dirt from coming inside the other rooms, have your guests and family members take their shoes off before coming inside, that'll prevent dirt from being anywhere

Having area rugs on flooring that is in a high traffic spot of the home will prevent any scratching of the floor and, again, prevent dirt from being tracked and built up around your home.

Mopping

Mopping your tile floors once a week will get rid of the dirt and grime from the week. Use warm water and you can add a mild detergent, or tile cleaner, just be sure to check and make sure any cleaner won't damage your tiles. Be sure to dry mop your floor after wet mopping. You don't want anyone to slip and fall!

Deep cleaning

It's recommended that you deep clean your floors twice a week. Once a week should be good if you vacuum/mop every day or every other day. If your floors get really dirty, twice a week would probably be better.

To deep clean your floors, mix together a solution of:

  1. 1 gallon of warm water
  2. 1/2 cup of white vinegar

If you don't have vinegar, you can also use rubbing alcohol.

This is a great way to clean your floors without using any harsh chemicals!

If something spilled and you need to clean up a stain, use a 1:1 ratio of scouring powder and warm water.

Grout

While we just discussed how to keep the actual tiles clean, we can't forget about the grout!

To go the simple, easy, at home solution route, you can mix together baking soda and water to create a paste. Spread the paste onto the grout and let it sit for a few hours, or even overnight. After letting the paste sit, use an old (or new) toothbrush and scrub away! Rinse with warm water and see the magic of baking soda right before your eyes LOL!!

(Seriously, we've tried this and it works amazing!!)

As long as you keep up with cleaning your floors, they'll still look great!! If cleaning your tile, hardwood, carpet, even linoleum floors is too much for you, give us a call at 508-223-0505, we're here to help clean your residential and commercial property!!

Household Cleaners to Disinfect your Swansea home

3/16/2020 (Permalink)

To properly disinfect your home, using any EPA-registered (environmental protection agency) products is recommended. Be sure you are using products appropriate for each surface!

If you don't have any proper disinfectants, some household items can work!

Make a bleach solution with:

- 1/3 cup of bleach per 1 gallon of water

- 4 teaspoons of bleach per 1 quart of water

Be sure the area you are using this bleach solution in is well ventilated!

NEVER mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners. This will create very dangerous vapors that should not be breathed in.

Areas that are "high-touch" should be cleaned often, every day ideally.

These areas include:

- Doorknobs

- Light switches

- Desks

- Toilets

- Faucets

- Remotes

When using EPA registered products, make sure you're checking the time the surface should remain wet to kill all germs possible. Click here for a list of EPA registered disinfectants.

Vinegar is also a natural, household item that you probably already have that is a great disinfecting agent! It has been shown to kill germs. The acid that is in vinegar is what kills the bacteria and viruses.

Mix water and vinegar at a 1:1 ratio.

When using vinegar as a disinfectant, it is important to note that it needs to be in contact with the surface for at least 20 minutes. 30 minutes is ideal. The best vinegar to use to kill flu like viruses is white vinegar because it is the most acidic.

It's also important to note that it isn't recommended to use your vinegar solution on natural stone (marble), cast iron, or aluminum.

Hydrogen peroxide is also great at killing germs! It's naturally antibacterial! Just be careful when using this, it can stain clothes and porous surfaces (such as marble). Hydrogen peroxide should be used diluted with water.
